Get Noticed During College Lacrosse Recruiting

June 1st, 2009
Anne Harvester asked:

If you are a high school student who dreams of attending college on a lacrosse sports scholarship, you are probably aware that the competition is fairly fierce for those coveted spots on a college sports team.  However, there are several steps that you can take so that college lacrosse recruiting coaches and scouts will remember you, including being prepared and organized before attending lacrosse recruiting camps, where your preparation will pay off.

The first item you can take care of in your preparation phase before attending lacrosse recruiting camps is to do a little homework.  Go online and explore the colleges that you are thinking of attending.  After looking at the classes each offers and who teaches them, you should next head over to the college\’s lacrosse department.  Make note of the names of the coaching staff, as well as current team players, so that you will be able to address them by name when you attend college lacrosse recruiting events.  Look at the team\’s record under the current coaches as well.  All of these bits of information will influence which colleges you might like to attend.

Another area to look at on the college website is their requirements for attending the college.  You will need to earn certain grades, have taken certain prerequisite classes, and also have a certain score on the SAT.  All of this can be discovered in advance of a lacrosse recruiting event on the college website, so you can plan ahead in terms of taking college entrance tests, as well as keeping your grades up in high school.

After this initial lacrosse recruiting search, make up a list of the top five or ten schools that you might like to attend on scholarship.  You can now focus your attention on this short list as you progress through lacrosse recruiting, so as to improve your chances of getting noticed and picked up by one of the colleges on your list.

Another important way to get positive notice is through attending lacrosse recruiting camps held at colleges on your short list.  Before you attend a camp, however, you will want to make sure to provide the lacrosse recruiting staff with a video of you playing a full game, in addition to game highlights.  Send a cover letter with the lacrosse recruiting video, giving your name, the position you play, as well as your jersey number, so that college lacrosse recruiting scouts can find you easily on the video.  Also send a note to the lacrosse recruiting staff letting them know which camps you will be attending, so that they will be looking for you.

When you attend a camp, make a point of introducing yourself to the college lacrosse recruiting coaches.  Also attend any special training sessions held off the field for camp participants.  All of these activities will help the college lacrosse recruiting scouts remember you, and remember that you were prepared and ready to go at every opportunity, thus making a favorable impression.

Use Lacrosse Recruiting Tournaments To Get Seen And Win Scholarships

May 27th, 2009
Anne Harvester asked:

Colleges with lacrosse teams will often hold lacrosse recruiting tournaments, inviting high school lacrosse players in to play games leading to playoffs so that lacrosse college recruiting coaches from the region can watch them play. If you are a high school lacrosse player, you will want to talk to your family and enlist their help, as well as the help of your high school coaches, so that you can be seen and get positive notice when you attend lacrosse recruiting tournaments this season.

Tournaments can last for one day or several. To find out more about lacrosse recruiting tournaments, visit the website of colleges you are considering attending, going specifically to the lacrosse department on the site. There you will find events listed, and you can see if and when lacrosse recruiting tournaments will take place.

Lacrosse recruiting camps sometimes also hold tournaments. A camp is somewhat different from a tournament in that you have the option of attending a development camp, where you get some intensive skill development and training, or lacrosse recruiting camps, where coaches and scouts are in attendance to watch as you take classes and play games. Check on the college websites to see exactly what is being offered. If you are a freshman or sophomore in high school, you may want to focus on lacrosse camps that offer skill building sessions, and when you are an upperclassman then turn your attention to lacrosse recruiting camps and lacrosse recruiting tournaments.

Both tournaments and lacrosse recruiting camps are also a great deal of fun. At lacrosse recruiting camps you will meet players from all over your region, have a chance to play with and against them, and learn new skills. There are also fun activities for when you are off the field in the evening, such as talks by college admissions and recruiting staff and movies.

You will want to prepare for lacrosse college recruiting by planning ahead. Coaches and scouts will want to see your lacrosse college recruiting video. This is footage of you playing a full game, and can include game highlights. If you send this in to colleges where you would like to attend and where camps and tournaments are being held, this gives the coaches and scouts a chance to see you play and get to know what you would bring to their college teams. Send the video before you attend a camp or tournament, and when you sign up, be sure to let the coaching staff know you will be in attendance, so they will be looking for you.

College lacrosse recruiting events can offer very exciting and fun times for you and your family as you prepare, and then play your best, as a way to win scholarships to top colleges.

Help Your Child Succeed at College Lacrosse Recruiting

May 26th, 2009
Anne Harvester asked:

If your child enjoys playing lacrosse and is college bound, you might be looking into ways to help pay for that education. Colleges offer sports scholarships for lacrosse, and they have college lacrosse recruiting staff who are on the lookout for great athlete-academics. There are a few steps you can take to help your child get a winning nod from lacrosse recruiting coaches.

You can begin by helping your son or daughter with researching some colleges or universities that he or she might be interested in attending. You will want to see who the college lacrosse recruiting coaches are, and what their scholarship requirements are. Knowing what is needed to reach your goal is the first step toward attaining it.

Once your child has narrowed down the list of favorite colleges, there are other steps that can be taken on route to a sports scholarship. Since having good academics is a regular requirement for admittance to college, just making sure that your child is studying and keeping up in high school is a great start. Preparing to take the SAT is a good idea, because these areas will be looked at by college lacrosse recruiting staff as your child works through the scholarship process.

Another activity that your child can participate in is a lacrosse recruiting camp. Not only are they a fun experience, but the students are seen by a variety of college lacrosse recruiting personnel, which helps them remember the student and evaluate them on the playing field.

Lacrosse recruiting camps also give you and your child a chance to visit a college campus where he or she might wish to attend. You can sit in on actual college classes, look into the college dormitories and cafeterias, and see if the college will be a good fit for you and your child. During lacrosse recruiting camp you may also have the opportunity to watch the college lacrosse team play, and you can see how the coaching staff interact with the players.

Another item that college lacrosse recruiting coaches will want from your child is a lacrosse recruiting video. You will want a digital version that can be uploaded to a website, and you will want that digital version of the lacrosse recruiting video dubbed to DVDs. This can get costly, but it does not have to. Your high school coaches typically take video of games played, so make sure they know your child is applying to colleges for lacrosse recruiting, and ask for copies of video they might have that showcases your child in a game. Anyone with Final Cut software and a home computer can edit the lacrosse recruiting video for you; check into nearby film schools where it might be done for free or inexpensively.

In short, anything you can do to help your child stay organized and make it easy for college lacrosse recruiting staff to see him or her play well is of benefit to your scholarship goals.
